You’re totally asking for it, Nona. You can thank Nona for all the clutter that’s going to puff up this blog! Her and my recently acquired unemployment status, that is. I can no long check off “student” as an excuse for being jobless, haha.

Winner Number Two!…
Elaine!

…like many others i’ve been battling persistent acne since my teens. the worst part is that the acne has consistently gotten worse instead of better! in my early 20s i broke out in cystic acne all over the lower half of my face. the hit to my self esteem was exactly like what others have mentioned. i hid my face from the world, didn’t want to go out, felt like everyone was staring at my scars and became more and more introverted. the fact that none of the products i tried had any affect only exacerbated the situation…

I totally relate to your stories of acne struggles. O, dear god, I can totally relate. In fact, I was relieved to know I wasn’t the only going through this in my 20s. My acne isn’t as bad as back in high school and my first year of college. I used to look like my face was being eaten alive by skin cancer. However, I still get flareups for any number of reason.
As a Korean, having acne was especially painful, not only because most Koreans seem to have perfect skin but because they would ALWAYS point it out, tell you how pretty you’d be without it and offer you unsolicited advice on how to deal with it. It’s like that was the FIRST thing they identified with you. Yea, I KNOW I have acne, thank you! Stop pointing it out, please! If you’re offering me advice, you’re assuming I haven’t tried everything. If I haven’t tried everything, then maybe I don’t care as much, so maybe you should stop offering advice when not asked! Pew, pew pewww! I’m shooting acne bacteria in your face! If you don’t like it, then leave me alone, kthxbye! Oh, and the peachiest moment of that lifetime was when my Korean priest came up to me, in front of many other parishioners, and suggested that I rub my own fresh urine on my face. I wish I was making this up.
And oh, how I looked forward to becoming an adult and not having acne anymore. Yet, here I am, going on 30 and STILL GETTING BREAKOUTS. HATE. SO. MUCH! If I so much as change moisturizer, I’m 65% likely to break out. If I eat fried chicken, I will absolutely break out. The latter really sucks because I moved close to a Popeye’s and I absolutely love it. It was actually a good thing Eugene didn’t have one. Now, I’ll have to drive past it everyday and cry inside or suffer cystic consequences. My acne also prevents me from eating Cheetos anytime I want. So lame. I fricken’ love Cheetos.
Oh, and you know what REALLY sucks? Having dry skin but still getting breakouts. Picture flaky eyelids and chin zits. The dryness was so bad last year. Then the irritation led to MORE acne flares. I’ve managed to keep the dryness under control this year, though, and I want to share some of my winter must-haves at another time.
Having low self-esteem because of acne doesn’t make you shallow and you shouldn’t berate yourself for it. Your face is the first thing you show to others. Your face gives others impressions of how you feel, who you are and even what kind of habits you keep. When you feel like your pimples are the first thing people will notice about you, you can’t help but feel that your pimples somehow identify you. You feel ashamed because you think people might assume you’re a dirty person who doesn’t wash her face. You don’t even ask to be called pretty but who wants to be called ugly? We’re inclined to link beauty with our personalities, even though it’s a wrongful and baseless assumption. So, when we’re flawed, we feel we become the “villains”. It’s difficult for one’s confidence to remain solid when one suffers from acne.
Keep in mind, however, that your acne does NOT define who you are, even if it may feel like it. Beauty is a strong first impression, but the lasting impression is in your actions and attitude. I hope that I prove to be a good example of this. I mean, I’m so damned gorgeous but my personality is … HAHAHA OMG I CANNOT FINISH THIS SENTENCE xD
Wow. I hadn’t planned on making this entry this long. I guess this happens a lot around here, though, haha. Anyway, I’m almost done with the unpacking. We just have to organize the kitchen and get rid of the unwanted stuff. I’m looking forward to taking advantage of my surroundings and my new situation soon!

I’m so glad to hear you’ve moved in alright. *hugs*
BTW, I love cheetos too. I can’t imagine having a combination of dry skin and acne. I think I’ve been pretty fortunate to not get too much acne and I’ve got the dryness under control, especially now that in the winter. I hate static in the wintertime. I felt like I was going through shock therapy when I took off my fleece in the office and proceeded to walk to the bathroom from my desk. On my way, each doorknob gave me a shock. Keep in mind, I had to go through multiple doors. Anyway, enough with my rambling in this little comment box.
I love you alienman!! (in a not creepy stalker way).
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :SUPA DUPA BIG HUGSQUISH: YAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAAYAY! Amg thank you Seyoung! I’m so excited to try it! And BRING OUT UR BLOGGING! WE’RE READY FOR IT!
My acne was worse in JHS also. Thinking back on it, I can’t even believe how I showed my face in school. My cheeks, my nose, my forehead, my temples, my chin (so basically my entire face except for my lips and eyelids) were covered in pimples. I’m glad it’s not that bad anymore and now I get them always on my cheeks and some on my forehead and chin. When I was in JHS and college, I always looked forward to getting older and finally grow out of this “phase”. But here I am at 24, and still have to be on antibiotics in order to have my breakouts be any worse. Guess some of us never grow out of his phase huh.
this is another awesome and inspirational post. yay for relocating! adult acne absolutely sucks, and definitely when you have dry skin on top of that. there’s barely any products out there that combats acne w/out drying out your skin. it definitely is more emotionally damaging when your family points out your blemishes, even though it might be something minute.
CHEETOS, OMG! i loooove Cheetos. i would eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I could. i’m sure they must have radioactive properties looking at the color and how long they can last, but they’re so yummy
good luck w/ the move! big changes like these are catalysts for better things to come
Oh man you’re in Portland now? Sweet! I’m in Vancouver and that means I can visit you!! Haha!
I love what you said about acne-first impressions. My skin was perfectly fine all through high school until last year, when I broke out none stop for half a year! My family members kept asking me what happened to my face and I felt like a monster. Applying makeup just worsened the situation so I just stopped going out. However the twist is that I have angoraphobia (fear of public spaces, mine was caused by my deppression), so you could imagine that the last thing I needed was an excuse to NOT go out. I literally locked myself at home for months!
I’m still battling my acne but it has since gotten a lot better. I found that narrowing down the source of acne (and there could be a few!) helps a lot when coupled with medicine/treatments.
But anyhoots enuf of my blabbing, I wish you a happy 2010 and happy unpacking!!
Yay congrats to the winners!
So Portland babe now huh?! Don’t forget to email me your new addy! If not I will HUNT YOU DOWN!!!
Just updated this post to add: “Oh, and the peachiest moment of that lifetime was when my Korean priest came up to me, in front of many other parishioners, and suggested that I rub my own fresh urine on my face. I wish I was making this up.”
Man, you guys have no idea how happy I am to hear that so many of you are going through similar things or have gone through them.
And that you love Cheetos.
Alienman, I SO empathize with your acne struggles. This is why I get horribly anxious and insecure whenever my mom tries to drag me to Koreatown, a Korean church, to see Korean relatives, Korean restaurants, etc. She actually wants me to go with her to KOREA of all places. For god sakes woman!!!
One of the things I’ve learned in my long struggle with acne (and you know about my subsequent treatment at the esthetician who has fixed my skin so well) is that a lot of times acne is from washing too much, especially with soap; I definitely know what it’s like to have acne and have the additional shame of being labeled an “unclean” person because of it. Most people with perfect skin will tell you they just wash their faces with water, or just once a day with cleanser. During my worst breakouts I was definitely washing way too often and with soaps that were much too harsh.
Also, the urine advice: it actually “works,” but it’s mostly an acidic/skin softening remedy. If you find a moisturizer with “uric acid” in it, that’s basically the same thing.
And ALSO, before this comment gets ridiculously long I thought you might find this helpful incase you haven’t come across it before:
http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/acnedetect.htm
They advise avoiding ingredients that have a 4 or 5 (or big red frowning face) in comedogenicity or irritancy. I realized that my non-irritating sunscreen and moisturizer had some stealthy pore clogging ingredients that I never realized until looking them up on that list.
Lastly, it’s really hard to keep your head up when people are being so judgmental about your appearance. Whether it’s your skin, weight, clothes whatever. Just remember their judgment is about THEM and not you!
