Starlings in the Attic

Remember these guys?

Fricken’ birds built another nest in the air duct last spring and we’ve been hearing their shrill cries since.

Our landlord waited until the summer to replace the grate, to ensure the birds had safely left the nest. The repair guy came in today, checked the air duct, determined that the birds had all flown away and replaced the grate.

Except, the birds had not all flown away. Only the mother had. The babies, however, had retreated into the attic.

I was at campus all day, so I was getting live feed about all this from my boyfriend via Google Talk on Blackberry. He was pretty distressed when the mother bird came back with food for her babies, but unable to feed them because of the new grate being in the way.

Cute boyfriend on Gtalk: This sucks :’(

Cute boyfriend on Gtalk: ok she (the landlord) is calling them :/
i don’t know what to do

me: The attic opens in the hall closet

Cute boyfriend on Gtalk: right but these are little birds who run away

My boyfriend is pretty sensitive towards animals. He couldn’t hurt a spider. Animals love him. My hermit cat, who’s about as friendly as an old man is to kids in his lawn, licked his arm and let him pet her on the second day she ever saw him. Within a month, she was sleeping on his chest. IT TOOK ME A YEAR TO GET THAT CLOSE TO HER.

This guy also rescued a baby raccoon from a busy street. When others were afraid of scaring it and thereby putting it in graver danger, he went and crouched towards it holding out a towel. The baby raccoon crept into his arms and he took it back to its family. All the witnesses aww’ed and ahh’ed. Yes, ladies and gentle-ladies. My boyfriend is Mowgli.

After his last comment, I was trying not to let my overactive imagination play the image of little baby birds in an attic running away from his large beckoning hands.

me: Call animal rescue
Mommy bird still out there?
Cute boyfriend on Gtalk: she was feeding them
pushing the food through the grate
ill send you a picture

Fortunately, the kind landlord was equally distressed about the birds. She had the handyman go back and leave the grate agape. We would have to wait until colder days to close it back and, until then, we are pretty much stuck listening to those shrill suckers all day and everyday.

All day.

Everyday.

Those birds won’t leave till the little ones have flown the nest! Then, you need to board up that hole to make sure they don’t come back! I once had a problem with an angy startling who ripped the wire mesh off the side of the house when she/he found the nesting spot closed up!!

I can relate to your BF…I’m a Mowgli with animals too. But make sure you close up that hole ones the birds have flown!
