My therapist and I randomly fell into a discussion about Oprah Winfrey.
I was surprised to find another person who suspected Oprah of being EVIL.
No, our conclusion was not to this extreme, but I never did approve of this woman’s immense power and popularity.
I remember people being shocked to hear this from me. They would argue, “Oprah is a HUGE philanthropist! She gives so much to the needy, builds schools for the poor in South Africa and she gave away cars to her entire audience!”
Nevermind that most of the people who got the Pontiacs had to sell them because they were taxed arms and legs for receiving them, while I’m sure Oprah and Pontiac were shaking hands behind curtains for getting the brand some air time. That’s way beside the point, actually.
I appreciate that she puts in so much effort into giving to those in need. That’s all great. I totally encourage her to keep at it. There are never enough philanthropists in the world and more rich people should follow her example.
However, I do not like the influence she has on our nation’s materialistic greed and generally poor self-image. I can’t stand that every single one of her magazine has HER on the cover with all kinds of digital and makeup manipulation done to make her look perfect. I hate that she’s telling women to love themselves for how they look but, at the same time, putting herself through yo-yoing fluctuations of body shapes herself. I also hate that she pretends to stand on some moral high ground, pretending there’s nothing more important to her than love, while pressuring her minions to wear her favorite brands and by her favorite shit. She is THE fucking economic stimulus. She actually tells people what we SHOULD be buying and what bras we SHOULD be wearing. I wanted to throw a mug at the TV when she made fun of women wearing cheap granny panties.
A lot of her shows are nothing more than infomercials, cleverly disguised as a talk show, selling expensive cars that parallel park for you and vacuum cleaners that roam the house by themselves. I can’t believe people buy into her ruse. WAKE UP SHEEPLE! Can’t you see?! She is just a MERCHANT.
It just doesn’t seem right that one should have so much power and influence over so many people that she can just get them to buy whatever she tells them to buy.

I don’t think Oprah appeals to ‘us’ Europeans. For me personally, there’s something quite disturbing about a talk show where people actually give standing ovations. And to be honest, most of what she has to say, I knew before I hit puberty.
Yup, that’s actually exactly how I feel about Tyra Banks, too (the ‘feel good about yourself the way you are but look how good i look all the time!’). But I have to sort of sympathize with them, since to an extent they act within the boundaries (of beauty, behavior, etc) set by society. Would more people watch the Tyra Show or Oprah if they were in PJs, sans-makeup, not touting stuff people want to buy anyways? what they’re doing is working, ratings wise and otherwise. at least oprah tries to get people to READ too (but i dunno, Oprah’s Book Club can be construed as just another component of the Oprah Industrial Complex)

Awww… I like Oprah (though I don’t buy any of here things, hehehe) but I understand.
Once in a while I watch her show. It used to be really good but now it becomes this thing where she started to “teach” people (The New Earth, remember?) Plus some of the episodes are really depressing. If I want something fun, I’d watch Ellen.

All she talks about is common sense, and yet she acts like it’s her original ideas and she should be praised for them. Pft.
*gasp* nooo alienman..how could you say such horrible things about Oprah?!?!? 0= haha..just kidding!!! haha, nah..yeah..actually I use to watch Oprah, and I use to love her show..but yeah..someone pointed out her shows are kind of depressing..and I noticed that too..it is depressing…I don’t watch her shows anymore either..cause..yeah..it’s pretty boring now…blah..yeahh i would totally watch ellen now..her show is more fun than Oprah’s show..although Oprah seems cool sometimes….and yeah..Tyra banks is annoying!! But i still watch her shows..haha. oh wells…but anyhoo~ alienman, u are very right about what u say about these talk show ppls…they can be pretty annoying, and hypocritical.

Here here! I don’t like Oprah either. I appreciate some of the books she has in her Book Club, but I hate how you see “O, Oprah Book Club” on each book that has been used. It’s like she’s taking credit for finding the book or something.

So totally agree. And if she is such the philanthropist…why does she have to make a 2 hour special about it?
So, I love Oprah, but aside from that I must say that we need to look at Oprah as a person. She is an inspiration to black women who dream to be better than what they were born into. She built an empire on her own. I agree that the US is too commercialized and people should not follow her blindly like lemmings but the problem here is not Oprah, it’s the people. We vote with our dollars and right now our dollars are saying “Go Oprah!” I believe people need to take responsibility for themselves and not blame others for their problems. Oprah is brilliant, I don’t give a shit about her philanthropic efforts, she’s a business woman and damn good one.
