Lousy cook? Try your hand at a mini-pizza.

Pizza is ridiculously easy to make from scratch. If you’ve never made one before, give this a try this week. Surprise your mother, father, sibling or significant other. Surprise your friends. Surprise grandma. Surprise yourself. “Surprise” is one of those words that starts to lose meaning when you say it over and over.

On rare occasions, I do try my hand at some simple culinary adventures. Some of them have even appeared on this blog and have fooled some of you into thinking I was actually pretty good at this whole “cooking” thing. HA! Fooled ya :D

I’m not a terrible cook. I’m just SEVERELY and WOEFULLY inexperienced. I was one of those tomboyish girls whose eyes glazed over every time her mother tried to teach her a basic Korean side dish. This is a very sad thing. My mom makes the best kimchi I have ever tasted and I need to learn before it’s too late. Unfortunately, every time I try to learn to cook from my mom, my eyes start glazing over as they used to when I was younger. It no longer has much to do with tomboyishness. I’m pretty sure it’s sheer laziness toward learning. Knowledge make hed hert *grunt.

A few years back, a friend of mine had e-mailed me a recipe for pizza. I was surprised at how easy it was to make. I made pizza quite often in my little college housing apartment. When I was in Korea, I made pizza for my family and they were quite delighted.

I don’t know why I ever stopped, but it’s been years since I had made a pizza and, last week, I thought it’d be nice if the boyfriend came home to homemade pizza for lunch.

I was unable to recall my friend’s recipe so I found a really good one on Epicurious.

I always like my dough to be really yeast-y(?). The recipe says to let the yeast work for a couple of hours but I let this sit in a covered bowl until the next morning.

Afterward, I separated the dough to 6 balls to make mini-pizzas. I accidentally bought pizza sauce, instead of the usual tomato sauce, but it turned out okay. For toppings, I sprinkled shredded mozzarella and feta cheese crumbles that were seasoned with herbs and sun-dried tomatoes.

The flavor of the crust and toppings turned out amazingly delicious. I wish I could say the same for the texture, but I made the STUPID mistake of putting them back into the still-warm oven to keep warm while waiting for Mr. Alien to come home. They weren’t burnt but the pizzas became crispy, crunchy pizza crackers. So, let that be a lesson to us all.

mmm yummy! I cook lots of things but never pizza from scratch. You just gave me a good reason to crack open that bag of yeast.

That looks good! I like toppings like feta cheese and sundried tomatoes too. Unfortunately my bf isn’t easily impressed by Western food so I would never be able to use this :’( He only cares about asian food….and they say guys aren’t picky…

My eyes glaze over when my mom tries to teach me anything about cooking too. Good thing she has a recipe book with all her good recipes written in it. I just copy them.

The whole “eyes glazing over” thing for me is only because I get criticized for doing things the “wrong” way as in cutting the vegetables wrong. I’ve tried helping and learning. So let’s put it this way, I’m an excellent sous chef. I can’t cook those special Mom dishes, but I’ve got the ideas.

  9. Gee

I want to try to make pizza!!!

I wouldn’t say I was good or bad at cooking, but rather lazy to do all the time -_-

I don’t think its the weather but it could be stress. Work has been getting to me lately, and also the lack of sleep can’t be helping I guess :S Thank you for the well wishes :)

Haha an Asian fusion pizza would be something…I think I’ve seen that in a place before where they tried to do a teriyaki chicken topping! lol I don’t think it tasted good though :D
