Your First False Lashes Pt. 2

Last week, I graced these pages with some tips on how to purchase your first pair of natural-looking false eyelashes.

Today, I hope to alleviate your fear of trying on these babies with the following tutorial. I hope you guys find this helpful.

Chances are that you’ll have to practice it a few times before actually heading out the door in them. So, make sure to do this when you have time to spare, as you would when playing around with other new makeup for the first time.

Firstly, are your peepers ready for falsies???

Before you put on falsies 1: Wait until you’ve finished applying your eye makeup. (O gross, I need a wax job… You can click on any of the images for a closer view)

Before you put on falsies 2: Apply eyeliner!

Even if you usually don’t wear eyeliner, you’ll have to this time, especially if you’re a falsie noob. The eyeliner camouflages the backbone of the falsie, so even if the falsies aren’t on perfectly straight or symmetrically, the eyeliner will hide this.

Before you put on falsies 3: Curl your eyelashes

Before you put on falsies 4: (If your lashes don’t hold a curl very well) Apply 1 coat of waterproof mascara

All right, let’s get to the good part!!!

STEP 1: TRIM YOUR FALSE LASHES… OMG I MEAN IT; WILL YOU TRIM THE DAMN THING, GAWD

By this, I mean, trim the falsie along the backbone. I usually trim mine about three or four notches/clusters in from the outside. That’s 3 or 4 x’s in on an XN.

Seriously, I can’t stress this enough.

Having a long backbone won’t do anything for you. It will irritate the inner corners of your eyes and drive you crazy throughout the day, even increasing your desire to poke and prod at it, ESPECIALLY if you’re a total falsie noob. A backbone that’s too long won’t blend in with your eyeliner very well, thus making it obvious that you’re wearing false lashes. It overpowers your eyes, thus making them smaller, which I’m sure is the opposite of what you were going for. Also, if it’s too long, it will fall off more easily.

Furthermore, you needn’t worry about it being too short. For one thing, you wouldn’t be dumb enough to hack the thing in half; you’d be more cautious than that… uh, right? Also, whether or not the inside lashes look long doesn’t make much of a difference. It’s the middle and outer parts of the lash line that really show a difference. That’s why some falsies actually come in partial lengths.

STEP 2: Put a drop of glue on a surface and NOT directly on the falsies

Photobucket

If you try to squeeze out the glue directly on to the backbone of the falsie, you’ll end up putting too much glue on. Gliding the backbone of the falsie along the glue allows for an even and minimal amount of application.

I like to put the glue on my knuckle b/c putting it on a surface makes it hard for me to run the curvy backbone along the glue w/o the ends getting in the way.

STEP 3: Let the glue dry on each falsie for a few seconds.

Photobucket

You want the glue to be tacky so that it won’t slip around the moment you try to put it on, but it will still be wet enough that you can shift it if necessary.

STEP 4: Rest your elbows on the table for stability and, using both hands, hold the falsies above your lash line. Your curled lashes may get in the way, as well as the folds of your eyelid close to your lash line. Lay your mirror flat on the surface of the table so that you’re looking down your nose into the mirror, causing you to lower your eyelids. This also works nicely for applying eyeliner and mascara.

The backbone should be as close to the lash line as possible without actually touching your own lashes. You’ll be in for a world of pain and anguish if your falsies dry on your own lashes.

STEP 5: Starting with the inner end, gently tap the backbone into your eyelid, using a cotton swab, working your way outward. Some people prefer using a bobby pin over a cotton swab.

STEP 6: Open your eyes, look up and blink a few times to make sure the falsies are in place.Photobucket

IT’S OKAY IF YOU DON’T GET IT THE FIRST TIME. Just take out the falsies. Start over from STEP 2. You DID make time for this as I advised, right?

STEP 7: Make sure your real lashes are well hidden.

Photobucket

Some people use their fingers to rub their lashes into the falsies. I get scared of my falsies falling off, so I use an eyebrow comb to tease them in. Using mascara is a last resort b/c I hate getting mascara on my falsies. If you’re going to use mascara, please make it as unnoticeable as possible. False lashes were not meant to be touched up with mascara. That’s like getting your acrylic nails done and then going home and putting on OPI over the acrylics.

STEP 8: DON’T TOUCH YOUR FALSIES FOR THE REST OF THE DAY

Photobucket

Keep a small tube of glue in your purse to reapply the glue if it does fall off. However, if you’ve trimmed your lashes and applied everything as I’ve detailed, you shouldn’t have to worry about this happening.

Sorry if the length of this entry makes it seem all the more daunting. I COULD just tell you to trim the ends, apply a very thin layer of glue and then pop them on. However, I just wanted to be as careful and as detailed as possible so that you’d feel as if I were helping you every step of the way. Don’t worry! Sooner than you expect, you’ll be popping those things on in a matter of seconds.

Thanks for reading, guys! Feel free to leave any questions, comments, requests, donations, firstborns…

Wow, your falsies look ridiculously natural. Maybe it’s time I splurge on the Missha falsies and pay $5 for a pair. Well…we’ll see. :P

You’ll be in for a world of pain and anguish if your falsies dry on your own lashes.

Best. Advice. Ever. Did that. Will not do it again. -_-

All I know is that I bookmarked the page, re-visited it frequently until I was confident enough to try it out :) I can’t say that I am a 100% pro at it yet, but this Tut DID help me get the basics, especially with cutting.
