To motivate myself to lose the extra poundage, I’ve been checking out Japanese magazine scans on a regular basis. This is an incredibly great source for viewing Japanese magazine pages for free, although the demographic seems currently confined to teens and early-20s. I love the looks, though, both fashion-wise and makeup-wise.
After checking these out, I checked out some Korean magazine scans and found their style to be rather dull, too conservative and uninspiring. Also, because of the current “no makeup” look trend, there seems to be little inspiration for fun makeup looks. This might be an early onset of mid-life crisis and I might be like those old ladies who wear bright red leggings and halter tops *shudder
Then again, many of the Japanese eye looks are similar in that they’re mostly nude-lipped and the eyes are framed with heavy HEAVY eyeliner and dramatic eyelashes. I’m sure circle lenses are now a standard in all Asian beauty promotional pieces.
I realize that there are varying trends amongst the young Japanese, but as far as makeup goes, there seems to be some techniques shared in common.

I love it, though. I personally don’t like heavy eyeliner, especially on the lower lash line, but I wanted to try this look out. I also wanted to see how I’d look in a tan because a)I HATE tanning but b) it’s inevitable that I will acquire one, like it or not and c) if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
In order to make the eyes look bigger and more emphasized, not only did they apply heavy eyeliner, circle lenses and false lashes, but they would often make their waterline look bigger by applying eyeliner a few millimeters below the actual lash line. In my diagram below, the green is the actual waterline (filled with white eyeliner), the purple is the lash line, the blue is the fake waterline (also filled with white eyeliner) and the red is the fake lash line drawn with eyeliner. Some of the models wore falsies on the repositioned eyeliner to make it even more convincing. The above pic is a bit of an exaggeration

Up close, it’s pretty obvious.

Full facial view.
It’s pretty understated in comparison and I’ve decided I’m still too chicken to try circle lenses. I’m way too proud of my perfect vision and I don’t want to ruin it. I’m always intrigued by the idea of wearing it, though. But I did brave myself for some heavy eyeliner application. Sorry it looks so yellow here, btw. Just trying out the tanned look for a test run.

I am alienman. Writing a small blurb about myself is the hardest thing to do. "Blurb" is a funny word.

I went thru a phase where i was osessed with the Ulzzang look and japenese inspired looks, but i kinda realised that the girls tend to look beautiful..but the same! Either way I still like the look but less intent on trying to imitate it. And its far too much effort, magically they all have huge eyelids and circle lens. Can’t deny it’s hot though, the tan is nice and subtle, more liek a glow!
ooh i really wanted to experiment this look myself before.. i wondered how they achieved the look of having to line the eyes (in black ) which made the eyes look bigger! Thanks for the tips! hehe.
wow…that’s an interesting post…i definitely noticed that the model had her false lashes normal than usual, lol…i agree with you though…i dont think i’d try circle lenses for me personally
Wow, if it wasn’t for your post I wouldn’t have noticed that the model has her false lashes placed lower than normal; I would’ve just thought she has big eyes, haha.
Nice to see a FOTD, it’s been a while since you posted one.
The second mag pic reminds me of Kim Kardashian style makeup.
It’s always interesting to see how the Japanese take the makeup scene to an extreme. I would never have thought of faux-ing a waterline!
I think your attempt turned out fine. It did make your eyes look slighty rounder. I LOVE the suble wing you did at the ends!!
And I know about the SN Birthday Suit! It looked like I had chocolate or turd smeared all over me lips… Grosss….
ps. I always see that you use the Missha Dolly Eyes falsies. Where do you get them? I would love to try them out.
I wish I could look like a doll! I think I got into makeup in the first place to try to learn how to look like the girls in the Asian magazines (effortlessly flawless) and also to learn the smokey eye. But I guess those circle lenses really finish off the doll-ish look, and I have no plans of trying those, either.
Something I noticed was that most of the girls in Asian ads all have small pointy noses. My nose looks like an elephant trunk compared to theirs.
Now that I think of it, their skin is probably airbrushed, too. They can’t possibly ALL have perfect skin that almost looks like plastic, can they? Now I don’t feel so bad…No, wait, I still wish I looked perfect like them. =P
I like your take on it (you even look like you have circle lenses on!), but I think that using more dramatic falsies would complete the dolly-ness. Velly velly nice!
P.S. Good news, you can visit my blog now. =) Bad news, no more anonymous stalking for me. =(
I’ve always wondered how they could line their eyes so heavily yet make their eyes look bigger… My japanese friend does it superbly but when I do it my eyes actually look smaller!! Even with falsies on!
I love the japanese look though, the makeup (which I can’t master though), the really light coloured hair and brows, shiny pink lipgloss and the hair and clothing styles. Especially the hair!!! I’m a BIG BIG fan of japanese hairstyles, they’re actually really well cut!
oh btw your brows are really cute! I don’t think i’ve ever said that to anyone before :S is it weird? but I think they’re really cute!
totally agree w/ you, i am way to proud to ruin my perfect vision wit lenses! hehe. but i never seen eyeliner done that way… its really kind of dramatic. that’ll take the slant right out of my asian eyes! haha. i gotta try it sometime..
you pull it off a lot better than the models. the models kinda look like the bottom corners of their eyes sag. it kinda freaks me out.
thanks for sharing that site. I’ve always wanted to peruse thru asian mags but never found a site for it. probably because i’ve never really looked.. = P
I kinda want to try this out thanks to you and Nic Nic
Interesting feedback! A lot of you bring up some pretty good observations here, esp about how they all seem to look alike. And, Suga, it’s true. All magazine images involve a LOT of makeup and airbrush tricks, not to mention cosmetic surgery esp in Japan and Korea.
I like how this makes my eyes look rounder and bigger, but I hope it doesn’t influence me into wanting my actual eyes to change.
Ooh I love the scans but they look scary when they pose. O_O. I like your perfectly winged eyeliner & hair <3333
circle lens scare me.. random question though.. hoe do you like living in eugene?.. My boyfriend and I are looking into places there.. california is getting to crowded for our liking!..
i think u did the look very naturall and it looks very sweet on u. i simply dun have the patience to put so much makeup on my eyes like the models… i think their eyes really stood out because of the flawless (photoshopped) complexion too.
really, you don’t have circle lenses? girl, you don’t need them!! your eyes are already big and beautiful!
That’s cute!
Grayburn
heck yah! we’re b-day sisters! one more day! are u excited?
These chicks are high on acid…there eyes tell it all…and when they have on the grey contacts it looks like they have cataracts…but somehow they make it look cute with the stars and hearts and pretty nails…yup they are on acid
